A claimed Level I or Level II designation may describe different features from one product line to another.

Evaluating Baton Holster Retention Levels in the Field

The correct answer depends on the operating environment and the user's ability to maintain the equipment.

Retention Must Support a Clean Draw

The best holster does not replace training. A secure design only works when the user can consistently defeat its retention features without breaking concentration or compromising grip. The draw sequence should be trained until it is direct: establish grip, release the retention feature, remove the baton, and move into the agency-approved deployment position.

This is particularly relevant for expandable batons. The officer may need to draw the baton, create distance, establish control, and deploy it while managing a subject, communicating with partners, or moving around obstacles. Common Selection Mistakes

One frequent mistake is treating all expandable baton holsters as universal. Small differences in tube diameter, handle shape, endcaps, and closed length can change the fit enough to affect both draw speed and security. Use a holster built for the baton platform you actually carry.

Another mistake is selecting a high-retention design without training the release. Extra security is valuable only when the user can access the baton immediately under pressure. If the release is unfamiliar, blocked by other gear, or difficult with gloves, the design needs reevaluation.
